Artist’s Statement :
Things that are visually identified can be perceived completely differently depending on subjective elements such as our own memories or experiences along with any impact from lights, shadows, positions or angles which are solely objective. Thinking that architectural pieces out there are a very decent subject that constantly gives us a visual stimulus, I started to seek the opportunities of reinterpretation or diversities of perception towards objects using architectural pieces as a subject to my work.
On top of this basic intent, I also pursued and tried to incorporate an aesthetic value into my work through such processes that I focused on maximizing the possibility of reinterpretations the light can bring up with the right moment caught into my work and also focused on creating certain proportions which can be produced by divisions within a frame. Eventually, I tried to show figurative similarities/dissimilarities inherent in a subject simultaneously, which will explain about “Isomorphism” in itself.
I hope that my works could provide people with some opportunities to enjoy a glimpse of unfamiliarity which does exist in our lives, yet has not been commonly recognized and furthermore, I also expect that people will not be biased towards what they see only relying on their own limited perspectives. In addition, frames intentionally divided into a certain proportion will be creating ironic yet pleasant moments by leading people to emotional stability and instability at the same time.
우리의 눈을 통해 이해되고 해석 되어지는 피사체들은 빛과 그림자 등의 객관적 요인과 함께 자신의 기억, 경험 등의 주관적 요인에 따라 전혀 다른 모습으로 해석될 여지를 지니고 있다. 난 이러한 재해석의 가능성을 조형적 피사체(주로 건축물)에서 찾아 내기 시작했다. 건축물은 시각적 자극을 지속적으로 주는 아주 강한 존재라는 생각 때문이다.
이를 바탕으로 난 시각적 재해석 작업 속에서 조형적 미학을 완성하기 위한 노력을 기울이기 시작했다. 빛으로 인한 조형적 피사체의 재해석 가능성을 극대화하고 이를 적절한 시점에 잡아내는 것을 작업의 핵심에 둔 것이다. 동시에 독특한 시각적 접근을 활용하여 프레임 속 공간이 분할되면서 새로운 공간을 창출하는 것에도 착안했다. 이른바 이종동형 현상(isomorphism)을 통해 피사체 속에 내재된 조형적 요소 간의 유사성과 이질성을 동시에 드러나도록 시도하였다.
결국 사진작업을 통해 감상자들이 일상적 모습들을 전혀 다르게 느끼며 고정관념을 탈피해 시각적 한계를 넘어서길 기대한다. 뿐만 아니라 재해석된 대상들이 프레임을 의미 있게 분할하며 안정감과 동시에 불안감을 조성시켜 아이러니한 만족감을 선사하는 것 또한 의도하고 있다.
